As a woman, I believe that our hair plays a major part in our confidence and we must take care of it with and without extensions. Here are a few Do’s and Don’ts that I created along my hair styling journey and they work for my clients and I hope they work for you!
Do
Wear a silk scarf to bed to tie down your edges if you have a lace frontal.
Use heat protectant when using curling or flat ironing products.
Use a lace closure if you are natural. Closures protect your hair and blend perfectly with the hair extensions, plus you don’t have to apply product or flat iron to blend your natural hair which can be damaging.
Take your wig off at night to let your scalp breathe. This is only if you have glue less wigs that don’t require to be sewn down (typically closure wigs).
Use an angled brush with powdered concealer to match the closure lace part with your skin color, this helps it look real, causing an illusion.
Leave your extensions or wig out to air dry when possible, air drying helps maintain luster and natural state curl pattern.
Don’t
Wear your sew in for more than 4-6 weeks or wig for more than 2-3 weeks. Your hair sweats underneath and you can create bacteria if you don’t allow your scalp to breathe or clean it thoroughly.
Take your lace frontal off if you are not a professional. Improper removal can and will ruin your edges as well as your skin.
Use oil on your hair everyday if it gets dry. Oil can make your hair look too shiny and cause build up.
Allow your braider to braid your edges too tight, this can cause tension and your hair can break off.
Wear a wig or closure that has lace that’s darker than your skin. It will not blend in with your skin and become very obvious.
Tips
I prefer closure wigs because I can take them off at night and let my scalp breathe.
