SUMMER BEAUTY TIPS
Summer is here and right about now your skin and hair are giving you the blues. During the summer months you can get oily, dry, tangled, flaky, itchy, and hard to manage hair all at the same time. The skin is dry, dark spots are more noticeable and your skin can be experiencing more than normal breakouts. With each season you notice chances in your hair and skin. If you want to prevent premature aging of the hair and skin, knowing what is needed to maintain a healthy glow and beautiful manageable hair is essential.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO SURVIVE THE HOTTEST DAYS OF THE YEAR?
#1 Always check your diet. You should make healthy choices. Stay away from foods that will cause inflammation or digestive upset. When your digestive tract is out of balance it can interfere with healthy skin and you may notice slow hair growth or other side effects. The skin is the largest organ of the body and you must remember that it is a reflection of how healthy you are on the inside. Salty snacks, coffee, and alcohol can dehydrate the body. Green leafy vegetables and fruits are nutrient rich and contain antioxidants that help to improve the digestive tract and your immune system. Probiotics can also assist in keeping the gut balance and healthy.
#2 Cleanse your face every morning and at night! In the morning it is good practice to cleanse the face, tone and apply SPF before you apply makeup. You can also add daytime serums to your routine to assist in blocking free radicals. For example a good vitamin C serum or will aid in preventing dark spots.
#3 Exfoliate. Don’t clog the pores with bacteria and dead skin cells. Invest in a quality facial cleansing brush to remove dead skin cells. If you don’t have the time to visit a spa for a pore cleansing facial you may want to try mild peels from Sephora or Ulta. Always check with your dermatologist and perform a patch test before using any new products on the skin.
#4 Shampoo more often. I know you have been told hair grows better when it’s dirty. This is a myth that should have never grown wings. Imagine what your skin would feel and look like if you waited to wash it every two-four weeks in the summer… your skin would be oily, clogged with dirt, and you may notice an increase in breakouts. When the pores are clogged and the skin is dirty you have an increase in bacteria on and underneath the skin. An unhealthy scalp will lead to unhealthy hair and increased shedding and hair fall. Shampoo the hair minimum once a week. Hair is dirty after three days so if you shampoo it twice a week it is perfectly ok. Make sure to use a shampoo formulated for your hair type and moisturize often.
#5 Protect. Hair and skin need protection from the rays of the sun. Protecting the skin from free radicals and the sun is important. The sun can cause premature aging therefore Dermatologist recommend using broad-spectrum SPF for the skin. I know many of you may be concerned about synthetic chemicals. There are several natural mineral based sun screens available. You can find them at your local health food store or ask your dermatologist for suggestions. When it comes to the hair, make sure you keep it moisturized and wear a swim cap when swimming in the pool or ocean. Salt and chlorine can severely damage hair and cause damage that cannot be repaired. Once hair develops split ends there is no repairing unless you can glue them together. It’s best to cut and start over.
#6 Stay Hydrated. Water, Water, water. Flush toxins from the skin!
#7 Invest in a Hydration Steamer. Steam for the skin and hair. Steam helps to remove dead skin and aid in removing dirt from clogged pores, increase moisture, elasticity, improve dermatitis and overall skin and hair health. Skin and hair will appear healthier and more pliable with consistent and continued use.
